Sisterhood

When I first learned that I was pregnant with my third child, I was secretly hoping for a girl. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t have been upset with a boy, because a child is a blessing in itself. But, there is something to be said for same sex siblings, especially close in age, which I can relate to from my own childhood, having a sister 22 months younger. I have a brother as well, and my siblings and I have always been super close, but my sister and I share a bond that sometimes is indescribable. I have been watching Siella and Gemma connect over the last few months, as their relationship grows stronger, and I understand, because I share that same bond with my sister.

My sister and I definitely have our differences like most siblings, but we always rebound from whatever we are going through. I know she is always there for me and can always rely on her, no matter what. She is an incredible Aunt to all three of my children, as well as a godmother to Ryder. She loves my kids more than anything in the world, and they share the same feelings about their “Auntie”. Our mom lost her sister at very a very early age, and she has always instilled in my sister and I how important it is that we have each other, and that we should never take it for granted. It is my intent to do the same for my children, and when they are older, I hope they realize how incredibly lucky they are to have each other.

Siella has been a great big sister to Gemma. At the tender age of 3, she already exudes maternal instinct in the way that she has been watching out for her little sis since the day she was born. She always makes sure to share whatever she has with Gem, and she has always taken an interest when I am changing a diaper, giving her a bath or a bottle. She’s such a big helper, and almost acts as an advocate for Gemma. They are definitely connected in some sisterly way.

Gemma wakes up every morning and looks for Siella. Usually waking her big sister up, and it’s funny, because Siella doesn’t seem to mind. They spend the mornings playing together, peacefully and quietly. Gemma calls Siella “Lala” or “Sissy” and it melts my heart every single time I hear it. She’s the most affectionate with Siella, giving her kisses and hugs throughout the day. I know when Siella is off at school or camp, Gemma definitely walks around our apartment wondering where her sister went, but when she comes home, she runs across the room to her, screaming her name!

It is a beautiful thing to see when Siella patiently sits down and starts playing with Gemma, teaching her how to color, build, even say new words. She has little nicknames for her like “Bubbah Baby, Gemmi-lish, and Chumpa (where these came from I don’t know). I am so blessed and lucky they have each other, and sometimes it makes me sad that Ryder doesn’t have a brother. A few close friends have boys with similar age difference, and I’ve noticed the brotherhood bonds, which makes me wonder sometimes, maybe a fourth is in our future.

I hope they grow up as close as they are now and will always love and support one another. And be around for each other to talk or share their stories. Sisterhood is about being there to encourage one another through good times and bad. It is more than friendship, it is a bond that will last forever.

  1. I grew up with brothers and never wanted a sister, felt like I avoided drama somehow lol, but your girls make it seem so special. I’ve always wanted another boy for Chunks to grow up with, praying that happens some day.
