Weekend Adventure at Coney Island

Weekends are, of course, my favorite time to spend with my family. The hectic schedules during the week force us to slow down and just enjoy our two days together. This weekend my family and I had a chance to visit Coney Island Brooklyn. The Coney Island community sustained an enormous amount of damage from Superstorm Sandy. After months of diligent work, the businesses have re-opened for the 2013 season. The recovery process is far from over but thanks to the Alliance for Coney Island for establishing #ConeyRecovers, a hurricane relief initiative to assist the Coney Island community affected by Superstorm Sandy. Now America’s Playground is back and better than ever.

The New York Aquarium was our first stop. The Aquarium is partially opened right now but that didn’t stop us from seeing the exhibits in the conservation center as well as outdoor spaces of sea cliffs where you can see the walrus’, sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, and penguins. We had a chance to catch a Sea Lion show in the fully re-modeled Aquatheater.

The kids had a blast watching the Sea Lions that just happened to return back to the Aquarium just weeks prior. The trainers were fantastic and Sea Lions didn’t miss a beat with their tricks.

The exhibits in the Conservation Center include Glover’s Reef, Coral of Fiji, Great Lakes of East Africa, and the Flooded Forests of the Amazon; which had us all in awe of the deep blue sea and beautiful fish swimming by. We were even lucky to catch a scuba diver cleaning the surfaces of the tank.

Next, we headed to the Boardwalk which brought back so many memories of when I was a kid. I remember coming to the boardwalk  just to ride the Cyclone three times in a row! The boardwalk not only includes the famous Cyclone but Luna Park, and Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement. The kids enjoyed the rides and my son is insisting on having in birthday party there in next month, which would be perfect! We also enjoyed lunch at Nathan’s Famous Hotdog! Our day wasn’t complete with a ride on the newly open Carousel! Overall, it was a wonderful day and we cannot wait to go back!

With all of the attractions being added and the thrills that have returned, families across the country should start making plans to visit Brooklyn. Rich in history, Coney Island is recognized worldwide as the birthplace of the American amusement park, the hot dog, and the modern roller coaster. There is something for everyone!

Coney Island has also announced Friday Night Fireworks scheduled to begin Friday, June 21st, and launching each Friday through the end of August. In addition,  you can also enjoy Flicks On The Beach movie night. The series now in its third year, screens movies every Monday on the Coney Island Beach near West 10th Street.
